Our Islands Our Home is a campaign led by Torres Strait Islanders to advocate and pressure the Australian Government to protect their homes through addressing climate change.
Torres Strait Islanders are on the frontline of the climate crisis. King tides, erosion, coral bleaching and inundation are threatening the homes and cultures of Torres Strait Islander People. Our Islands Our Home began in 2019 and was founded by eight claimants from Zenadh Kes known as #TorresStrait8.
After winning a human rights legal fight against Australia under the UNHCR, the Australian government is now obligated to pay adequate compensation to the claimants and do whatever it takes to ensure the safe existence of the Torres Strait Islands.
Our Islands Our Home continues to advocate for greater climate change policies as well as build an in-depth and diverse climate movement.
