Jailing is Failing

Learn more Visit Campaign

The Australian imprisonment rate has surged over the last three decades, from 119.2 in 1993 to 202.3 in 2023 (per 100,000 of the adult population) with 33% of people in prison being First Nations.

Jailing is Failing is an initiative that believes in the urgent reduction of incarceration rates within Australia. The campaign seeks to unite organisations, political leaders and the general public around how our current judicial systems and over-reliance on incarceration are failing people and communities.

Jailing is Failing acknowledges and supports the current and long standing efforts of First Nations-led organisations in reducing incarceration through reinvestment and community led strategies. Additionally, Jailing is Failing supports organisations advocating against the hyper incarceration of women, people with mental health issues and people with disabilities.
