Just Reinvest NSW advocates for and runs justice reinvestment programs as a way of reducing First Nations Peoples interactions with the criminal justice system.
Just Reinvest began in 2011 and seeks to fund and support First Nations communities in developing their own solutions to reduce incarceration and interactions within the criminal justice system. These community-led reinvestment programs, that are informed by data and other evidence, redirect funds away from systems that harm people, towards community strength and safety and have proven to be more effective and less costly than incarceration systems.
Just Reinvest NSW works to raise awareness of justice reinvestment, and advocate for this approach to be widely adopted. Just Reinvest NSW is an independent, not for profit, membership based organisation, auspiced by Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) Ltd, and has a coalition of more than 20 organisations.
Just Reinvest has ongoing programs being run in Mt Druitt (Darug Country in Western Sydney), Moree and Kempsey, along with their Maranguka project. Programs such as OzTag, Mounty Yarns (advocacy and storytelling), learner driver mentor programs, youth support and more, are designed to support and create safer communities and help keep young people out of prison.
ANTAR is a long time member and supporter of Just Reinvest, read more about our position on the campaign here.
