This ANTAR Submission highlights how Australia continues to uphold laws, policies and practices that impact negatively on the rights and well-being of children and young people and fail to serve the wider public interest.

Systems of detention, care and child protection in Australia have not only largely failed to address the challenges faced by children and young people in care and detention, they have in some cases exacerbated these problems. This is particularly true for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, who face unique challenges of intergenerational trauma, institutional racism and disadvantage in addition to the larger range of issues affecting children engaged with the criminal justice system (CJS).
