Truth and Justice Commission Bill 2024

Jessica Johnston Uluru Dialogue
Last edited: October 15, 2024

In this joint submission, ANTAR and the Uluru Dialogue make recommendations with respect to the establishment of a Commission to inquire into and make recommendations to Parliament on particular matters relating to historic and ongoing injustices against First Peoples in Australia and the impacts of these injustices on First Peoples.

In particular, we propose a model of truth-telling that includes the establishment of a national truth body to coordinate, connect, animate and support localised First Nations community-led truth-telling efforts. Once this greater foundation of localised truth has been established across Australia, we believe the national truth body would be in a strong position to inform the design and scope of a national Truth and Justice Commission to complement and galvanise ongoing local truth-telling, as well as to drive government accountability for structural reform at all levels.
