Survival Day Events Listing

Here’s a summary of Survival Day events happening around Australia on 26 January 2023 – a way to mark the day respectfully.

The Great Debate

Every year, the celebration of Australia Day on 26 January causes more and more controversy, with an increasing number of Australians believing that 26 January is not the date to celebrate.

Why we should rethink 26 Jan

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as many non-Indigenous Australians, believe that 26 January cannot be a day of national unity as it marks the date of invasion and the start of dispossession in Australia.

On 26 January 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip raised the flag of Great Britain and proclaimed a colonial outpost at Warrane (Sydney Cove), on the sovereign lands of the Gadigal Peoples of the Eora Nation.

Survival Day

26 January is not the date to celebrate. It’s a day for respecting the survival of First Nations Peoples in the face of systematic ongoing injustice. We need a national day that brings all Australians together, rather than divide us.
