Historic meeting agrees to engagement for constitutional recognition proposal

A week to respect and honour First Peoples spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights organisation ANTaR today honours and pays its respects to the connection to land and sea of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - the oldest continuing cultures on the planet.
National Director Andrew Meehan said the week was a great opportunity for all Australians to pause, learn about, and pay respects to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander country, particularly that on which we walk and live each day, or travel through on a regular basis.

Report an important step towards a referendum to recognise First Peoples
Advocacy organisation ANTaR said the tabling of the Final Report of the Joint Select Committee on Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was another milestone in moves towards a referendum.
National Director Mr Andrew Meehan said the Report formed an important part of the national conversation needed to finalise a proposal to put to a referendum.

How Recconilied Are We?
Relationships have been built, trust and respect has widened and there exists today a greater awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, and our shared histories, than what existed in the decades that preceded the turn of the century.
This week is an opportunity to renew our commitment to reconciliation, and reflect on how far we have come as well as the journey ahead towards a reconciled nation.
Greater Investment in Communities is Needed, post-Budget
The National Justice Coalition today expressed concern that the Budget failed to include the targeted investment needed to change the record on the crisis levels of imprisonment and violence currently being experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. read the Media Release from the Change the Record Campaign here.

Unfair Budget has left Indigenous Affairs adrift
