  • ANTaR responds to the Attorney General's Freedom of Speech Exposure Draft

    ANTaR has submitted its response to the "Freedom of Speech (repeal of s.18C) Bill 2014" Exposure Draft realeased by Attorney General George Brandis on March 25 2014.

    The Exposure Draft proposes to alter the Racial Discrimination Act (1975) by removing the prohibitions on hate speech contained in section 18C. 

  • Next step towards Constitutional Recognition

    Last week the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Nigel Scullion, announced that the Australian Government has established a panel to review public support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander constitutional recognition.

    The review follows on from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Recognition Act 2013, which passed unanimously through the Australian Parliament last year, and is the Government’s next step towards a referendum on the issue.

    Addressing supporters at ANTaR’s National Close the Gap Day Picnic at Prince Alfred Park, Sydney, Kirstie Parker – Co-Chair of the Close the Gap Committee and Co-Chair of the National Congress – spoke about her vision of Australia becoming “a big and courageous nation” and overcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health inequality.

  • National Close the Gap Day

    ANTaR supporters joined the expected 150,000 people gathering around the country today to show their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equality on National Close the Gap Day.

    The Annual National Close the Gap Day Picnic at Prince Alfred Park, coordinated by ANTaR in partnership with Oxfam, was one of the record 1250 events taking place across the country.

    ANTaR will be marking National Close the Gap Day with our Annual National Close the Gap Day Picnic at Prince Alfred Park, Surry Hills, Sydney on Thursday, 20 March. 

    Join us in sending a powerful message to all Members of Parliament that we are committed for the long-term and they should be too.

    Let's send a strong visual image to Canberra that now is not the time to walk away from this generational commitment to closing the gap in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equality.

    Justice Targets are needed for action on Aboriginal jobs and education.

    ANTaR supports the calls made today by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (NATSILS) and the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples for the Governments of Australia to adopt Justice Targets.

    Dr Lewis said that the Abbott Government has a commitment to improving Aboriginal education and employment, but the continued high rates of incarceration are a major barrier to achieving it.

  • Position Open - Assistant Campaigns Officer (part-time)

    ANTaR is seeking an Assistant Campaigns Officer to join our team on a part-time, short-term contract. 

    The Assistant Campaigns Officer will assist in the coordination of campaign activity relating to our three key campaigns - constitutional recognition, justice and health equality.

    The person we are looking for will have experience in campaigning and event management, will be committed to the realisation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples rights and will be available for an immediate start.
