ANTaR supports the calls made today by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (NATSILS) and the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples for the Governments of Australia to adopt Justice Targets.
Dr Lewis said that the Abbott Government has a commitment to improving Aboriginal education and employment, but the continued high rates of incarceration are a major barrier to achieving it.

Justice Reinvestment - A call for investment into Justice Reinvestment
The Greens have announced a plan to introduce Justice Reinvestment across Australia.
The plan includes investing $10 million over 4 years to establish a national centre for justice reinvestment; and $50 million over four years to fund a justice reinvestment grants program.
ANTaR welcomes this committment and urges the Government and opposition to match it.
Justice Reinvestment Senate Inquiry Report Released
The Senate Committee report was released in late June. Nine Recommendations were made by a majority of committee members for the Commonwealth to play a role alongside state goverments in progressing a Justice Reinvestment approach to crime in Australia. Demand Justice for Kwementyaye Briscoe’s death
On the 17th September, the Northern Territory Coroner handed down his findings into the death of Kwementyaye Briscoe. The Coroner’s report made strong findings of “multiple failings” by NT Police, including an ‘utter dereliction of duty’ which resulted in Kwementyaye Briscoe’s death.
