  • Justice Targets Breakthrough

    Minister Macklin's announcement today of Labor's Closing the Gap policy statement includes a welcome breakthrough with justice targets being included in the Closing the Gap framework.   

    The Labor policy commits to developing a new Closing the Gap target aimed at tackling the high rates of engagement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the criminal justice system, particularly young people.

    Acknowledging that education and employment can be drivers of high incarceration rates, the additional commitment to these areas is a welcome component to this framework.

  • Alice Springs Grog Summit

    ANTaR NT's David Cooper attended the Alice Springs Grog Summit held on 30 and 31 July.  Read the APONT Communique outlining the proceedings and identified priority areas here.  Summit delegates agreed that there was an urgent need for action and better evidence to address alcohol related harm both in Alice Springs and across the NT.

  • Justice Reinvestment - A call for investment into Justice Reinvestment

    The Greens have announced a plan to introduce Justice Reinvestment across Australia.

    The plan includes investing $10 million over 4 years to establish a national centre for justice reinvestment; and $50 million over four years to fund a justice reinvestment grants program.

    ANTaR welcomes this committment and urges the Government and opposition to match it.   

  • Close the Gap Volunteers Needed

    The annual NRL Close the Gap round is fast approaching again and we need some volunteers to come and help get pledge signups at games.  This is your chance to get along to an NRL game and put health inequality in the Sin Bin.
    There are plenty of volunteer opportunities available at the games.  Help us to collect pledge signatures from people attending the games and apply temporary tattoos to kids at the game and you’ll receive a ticket to watch the rest of the game! (You’re free to leave after half time if you wish)

    ANTaR looks forward to working with both co-chairs in supporting the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and in continuing the vital role of the National Congress of Australia's First Peoples.
