    Horrific abuse of young people in Northern Territory must lead to real change

    National advocacy organisation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, ANTaR today called for the sacking of Northern Territory Minister for Corrective Services, Justice, Families and Children, John Elferink following harrowing footage of abuse of young people in detention at Don Dale youth detention centre.

    National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership organisations met today to map out the first steps towards a new relationship between Australia’s First Peoples and the Federal Government.

    The following First steps for a new relationship have been called for

    1) A meeting between the Prime Minister and a coalition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders within a month of forming government

    "National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership organisations will gather together today to map out the first steps towards a new relationship between Australia’s First Peoples and the Federal Government. The meeting follows a previous gathering on 9 June, when Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations jointly signed the historic ‘Redfern Statement’."

  • We can and must do better

    ANTaR today released a platform of action for government across a range of areas based on clear calls from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, to make clear to an incoming government what must be done. These actions have been called for by First Peoples and must be taken up by government in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  We will be taking it to government, engaging with our supporters on it, and continuing to steadfastly stand with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for justice, rights and respect.
