Rock for Recognition is an ever-growing group of artists from all genres promoting the importance of this constitutional change and inspiring many more Australians to join the movement.
Our constitution is silent on 50,000 plus years of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander occupation of this land and still contains provisions that allow the Parliament to enact racially discriminatory laws.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have long called for constitutional change to correct this extraordinary omission and ensure discriminatory provisions that have been used against them are removed.
In 2011 a panel of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous people engaged across the country on this issue and found widespread national support.
Since then, the membership of the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples rated this issue among the top issues needing to be addressed.
Momentum is now gathering in the wider community in support of such moves.
The changes being put forward would see recognition of the prior occupation, continuing cultures, languages, and heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the removal of discriminatory provisions.
We need to fix this historical exclusion and ensure our Constitution is free from racial discrimination.
