ANTaR - Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation
May 2008 Issue 7

Dear [firstname,fallback=friend],

Sorry is the first step

Story Time by Heide Smith

The National Apology on February 13 was a truly momentous occasion. The healing power of that simple word - sorry - has helped to build a bridge of trust.

Our task now is to make sure that we don't look back on the apology to the Stolen Generations as merely a symbolic gesture, but as the beginning of something far more significant.

The Stolen Generations survivors should benefit from both a specific, targeted response that comprehensively addresses the recommendations of the Bringing them home report, as well as broader efforts to close the gap in Indigenous life expectancy and health status.

We need to make sure that ANTaR is in the strongest position possible to really fulfil the enormous promise of the national apology. To be able to do so, we need your help!

  • Donate online now to help ANTaR call for reparations for the Stolen Generations and continue our campaigning efforts for all Indigenous Australians.
  • Email your elected representatives to implement all the recommendations of the Bringing them home report, including reparations.

Update -- the Seven Steps for Justice campaign

Seven Steps campaign logo

Prior to the federal election last November, ANTaR promised that we would seek meetings with both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition, to urge them to adopt a cross-party approach to the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Thank you for your donations and for signing the Seven Steps for Justice pledge. With your help, ANTaR has been able to lobby the Prime Minister and Opposition and make some headway on these important issues.

We're a finalist for a MySpace Impact award!

A core part of ANTaR's work involves encouraging more people to get involved in campaigning for justice for Indigenous Australians.

One of the ways we reach out to new people is to make friends with people on MySpace and Facebook and keep them up-to-date with the work we're doing. Some of our most active supporters first got involved with ANTaR on MySpace or Facebook.

Our wonderful MySpace friends have nominated ANTaR for a MySpace Impact Award. The Impact Awards highlight Australian MySpace users who are using MySpace to make a positive impact on the world. We are now a finalist and are in the running to win $10,000!

We can only win the $10,000 prize if people vote for us, so if you have a MySpace account please vote for ANTaR before 8pm this Friday (23 May).
